MEMBERSHIP

 

Section 1. Membership in this chapter shall be known as active, honorary, and graduate.  Active members become graduate members at graduation. Honorary members may be appointed by a majority vote of the Faculty Council. Graduate and Honorary members have no vote in chapter affairs.

 

Section 2. Membership in this chapter is an honor bestowed upon deserving students by the faculty, and shall be based on the criteria of Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character.

 

Section 3. Eligibility.

  1. Candidates eligible for this chapter must be members of the junior or senior class.

  2. To be eligible for selection, candidates must have been in attendance for a period of one semester at Shady Spring High School.

  3. Candidates eligible for selection shall have a minimum cumulative weighted grade point average of 3.6.

  4. Upon meeting the grade level, attendance, and GPA requirements, candidates will then be considered based on their service, leadership and character.

SELECTION OF MEMBERS

 

 

Section 1. The selection of members to this chapter shall be by a majority vote by the Faculty Council.

 

Section 2. Prior to selection, the following shall occur:

  1. Students’ academic records shall be reviewed to determine scholastic eligibility.

  2. Students’ discipline records shall be reviewed to indicate honor.

  3. Students who are eligible scholastically shall be notified and asked to complete an application in guidance for further consideration for selection.

  4. The Faculty Council shall be requested to evaluate each candidate’s character and leadership based on the information found in the discipline records, on the application and in discussion about the candidate.

 

Section 3. The selection of new, active members shall be held once during the spring semester of the school year.

 

Section 4. Candidates who are approved by the Faculty Council become members at the induction ceremony held in the spring semester of the school year.

 

Section 5. An active member of the National Honor Society who transfers to Shady Spring High School will be automatically accepted for membership in this chapter. The Faculty Council shall grant one semester to the transferring member to attain the membership requirements and, thereafter, this member must maintain the requirements for this chapter in order to retain his/her membership.
